Biographical Sketch:
Son of Jonathan & Rebecca Richmond. Served as clerk in Geneseo, NY. He was a clerk in a New York silk house for 2 years and had his own business for 2 years. In 1828, joined an exploratory group reaching west to Pontiac. Returned to NY until 1834; contracted cholera in Michigan; left but returned to Grand Rapids, 1836 and, with others, bought the 'Kent plat.' 1838, appointed by the President as Receiver of the Ionia Land Dist.& in 1845, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Held 2 commissions as Brigadier-General in the state militia. Active in railroad expansion and director of the Michigan Southern Railroad for several years.

Find-a-Grave.com gives death date as 11/3/1870. He helped construct one of the first bridges over the rive in Grand Rapids and established a street-railroad there.
