Came to Michigan around 1869. He began his training as a printer in St. Thomas, ON and came to Detroit as an apprentice. He was identified with organized labor in an official capacity for years, having served as recording secretary of the Council of Trades and Labor Unions 3 consecutive terms, and was a member of the Detroit Typographical Union for over 20 years, and served as its president. He served on the Detroit Common Council and alderman of the 9th ward.
