Biographical Sketch:
Son of Phinehas and Ruth (Perry) Rice. He arrived in Detroit in 1825 and practiced medicine for 9 years. He then began to manufacture lumber in Port Huron, Saint Clair and Detroit, considered the pioneer of the lumber business in the area. H managed the Black River Steam Mill Company, 1838-41. He was Indian agent on Mackinac from 1842-44. In the fall of 1848, he began construction a new steam mill but in April 1849 when he was taken ill and died in Detroit.
