Of German-English descent. Son of Jacob and Harriett (Durant) Reutter. After leaving school, he secured employment as clerk with the Newcomb-Endicott Company in Detroit. He later acted as traveling salesman for them before entering the real estate business. Served for 2 years as an estimator on Detroit's board of estimates.
