He was a native of New York and moved to Ann Arbor in 1835. Before coming to Michigan he had been 'a licensed exhorter' in the Methodist Episcopal church, but studied law, was admitted to the bar, and came west to practice. He served as county treasurer in 1836, recorder in 1838 and 1845. Member of the Odd Fellows.
