Biographical Sketch:
Son of Hezekiah & Hannah Hayden. They died when he was 5 & he lived with an older sister for several yrs. Work with an elder brother as a salesman, 1829-34 in Buffalo; became a cabin-boy on Lake Erie briefly. Studied civil engineering in Cleveland. Came to Michigan, 1837, to find work as a surveyor. Settled in Jackson, 1838. Held several positions with the railroad before resigning & getting into mill work producing flour.
