Son of Lucinda (Freeman) Powell. Born in Massachusetts but spent part of his childhood in New York state. He came to Michigan in 1835. He was living in Porter, MI in 1850. He served as supervisor for Porter, MI, in Cass County, 1842 and 1856; school inspectorand a justice of the peace in both Cass and Saint Joseph Counties. He retired and lived in Constantine, MI in 1887,
