He came to Michigan in 1838. He was engaged in the clothing trade in Grand Rapids. He served as assistant postmaster in Washington, DC and the first Clerk of the US District Court of Western Michigan. He was one of the men who 'organized' the First National Bank in Kent Co. in 1864
