Biographical Sketch:
He was born in either Seneca or Tompkins county, NY, in 1819, and when a child was taken by his parents, James and Margaret Porter, to Pennsylvania. He came to Michigan in 1838, residing for a short time at Marshall before moving to Greenville, Montcalm Co., in 1845 or 1847 and on the organization of that county was elected county treasurer, holding the position 4 years. He moved to Grand Rapids in 1855. In 1856 he changed his residence to Wyoming township, Kent Co., where he followed farming until his death.
