Biographical Sketch:
Of German descent. Son of Philip H. and Anna (Mater) Schantz. Moved to Barry Co., MI with his parents at age 14. Went out on his own at 20. Taught school for 4 years; work in a railroad office for 1 year; 6.5 years in the Lumberman's National Bank of Muskegon and 8 years in mercantile positions. A few years were spent in office work and as a traveling salesman. He eventually returned to farming, raising purebred sheep and swine. Active in national livestock shows and secretary of the Barry Co. Agricultural Society. He was superintendent of the sheep department of the International Live Stock Show at Chicago for 10 years. He was a Mason, state recorder of the Court of Honor, and the Star Grange of Barry county, and was secretary of the Barry County Agricultural Society.
