5th son of Peter (jr.) b. 1792; grandfather Peter b. in Holland, emigrated to NY; mother, Mary Turner, born in N. Ireland; Mark's parents moved to MI, 1832. Worked on his father's farm until 19 years of age. Began reading law in 1861 w/ ex-Gov. Wisner and Hon. M. E. Crofoot. Admitted to the bar, 1864. City attorney of Pontiac in 1866-1869; circuit ct. commissioner for Oakland Co. 1866-1869; appointed consul general to Berlin on 6/30/1881, by Pres. Garfield & served from 8/29/1881-6/7/ 1885;appointed a member of the U.S. Civil Service Comm. by Pres. William McKinley 1/18/1898-3/18/1901.
