Biographical Sketch:
Moved to Lowell, MA, where he graduated from the state normal school in 1848. In 1851, Dewey became principal of the Mann School in Lowell. Moving to Wisconsin in 1852, he taught in that state until 1856, when he moved to Buchanan, MI to become principal of the local union school. By 1857, Dewey was appointed deputy superintendent of public insruction and served in this role for 2 years. In 1858, Dewey became editor and publisher of the Niles Enquirer until 1866. He then owned and edited the Hastings Banner for several years. He went on to own and edit the Owosso Times. Dewey was also in the postal service for several years.

Notable Facts:
Grandfather of Thomas E. Dewey, 3 term governor of New York and presidential candidate in 1944 and 1948.
