Son of Earl Douglas [Carl?] & Elizabeth (Barlow) Howard. Attended Fredonia Academy in NY. Moved to Detroit, 1838; joined the 1st regiment of state militia in Detroit, 1838; member of the Brady Guards. Appointed Deputy US Marshal of Michigan 2 yrs. Moved to Ann Arbor to study law, 1847. Went into the lumber business in Holland, 1854. Raised what became Co. I, 25th Michigan Infantry, 1862, but did not serve. Involved in railroad development. Closed his mills & went into law practice 1867
