Of English descent. Son of Col. James Newton, who was a member of the Michigan Constitutional Convention of 1835, and of the Legislature prior to 1840. The son came to Volinia, MI, in 1831, and became a successful farmer. He held many local offices, including that of Supervisor 1851-52; appointed a census taker in 1835. Member of the Cass County Pioneer Society, the Masons, Anti-horse Thief Society
