At age 20, he taught school winters while studying medicine. He attended medical schools in Albany and Castleton, VT. In 1834, he moved to southern Michigan to practice medicine, eventually settleing in Flat Rock.. He acted as consul in Sarnia ; and in Windsor, ON 188873-76.
