Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish and Scottish descent. Son of William H. and Ruth (McAllen or McAllum) Ballentine. Moved to Calais, ME at 16 for 8 years; apprentice to hatter's trade. Moved to Canada in 1855 but then moved to Brockway, St. Clair Co., MI in October 1856 where he worked in a saw mill for several years and bought a farm. In 1864, he opened a mercantile business in Brockway. He served as postmaster, 8 years; and as justice of the peace. He held school offices for many years.
