He was educated in the district school and at the Ovid high school, Spring Arbor Seminary, and the University of Michigan. He graduated from the law department of the state university, and was admitted to the practice of law at the age of twenty-two years.
Biographical Sketch:
With the exception of a few years spent in Dakota, Texas and California, he has lived all his life in Michigan. In 1901 he was admitted to practice in the United States Circuit Court and in the United States District Court at Grand Rapids. In 1912 he was appointed by the national government white slave officer for the Ludington district. He served eight years as city justice of Ludington and two years as prosecuting attorney of Mason county.

Republican and was elected to the 1919-1920 and 1925-1926 legislatures, and re-elected November 2, 1926, without opposition.
