Biographical Sketch:
A daughter of Palestinian refugees. She was raised in Southwest Detroit, the eldest of 14 children. She worked at a number of nonprofit organizations, including the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) and the International Institute of Metro Detroit. After leaving the legislature she worked at Detroit's Sugar Law Center, serving the city's downtrodden.
Notable Facts:
She was the first Muslim woman elected to the Michigan Legislature.
Won for the Democratic primary for 13th Congressional District seat in 2018, to replace John Conyers. She was one of the first Muslim American woman to hold a Congressional seat. Ran unopposed by Republicans in the November 2018 race.
