Biographical Sketch:
He was the son of Enos and Mary. He emigrated to Michigan in 1829, and settled in Ann Arbor. At Kalamazoo he was Justice, Supervisor, and Prosecuting Attorney. In 1836 he removed to Ionia and was the first Supervisor in 1837. In 1855 he was elected Speaker of the House, the first Republican who held that position. He was a Whig until 1854, then a Republican until 1860, and then supported Stephen A. Douglas, and remained a Democrat. "Uncle Cy," as he used to be known, was a fine scholar, and an able but eccentric man.
Notable Facts:
Built the first dwelling in Kalamazoo in 1832.
