Biographical Sketch:
Son of John and Anna (Riest) Miller, his parents were of German descent and both spoke German and English. While John was young the family removed to Rochester, Oakland County, MI. He was unable to attend school past 13 but read in his leisure to educate himself. At age 13 he moved in with his oldest brother, Jacob Miller, and worked in his lumber business in St. Clair Co.. Soon, in 1832, he was hired by the Black River Steam-mill company in Port Huron, MI where he worked various positions. He then opened his own mill. In 1852 he partnered with William Stewart to open a hardware store. He clerked for a bank for a time and eventually owned a banking business. He was liberal in his religious beliefs but was a conservative Democrat. He was thrice elected Mayor of Port Huron. Member of the Masons and a Knight Templar.

Notable Facts:
Exact month and day of death is unknown but year is correct. His mother was Mormon. His wife had been educated at Bissell's Academy on the Western Reserve in Ohio, and Mr. Miller often credited his wife for his success. Obit in the Pt Huron Daily Times gives birth year as 1813 rather than 1818.
