Biographical Sketch:
Son of Henry and Margareth Gies. He moved to Detroit with his parents in 1832. He was a clerk in his fathers tavern. In 1858 he had businesses in Newport (later called Marine City), MI. He enlisted in the 27th Michigan volunteers in the Civil War. As a lieutenant he fought in Tennessee. Illness forced him out of the service and he returned to Detroit. He was elected to Detroit's Common Council served 6 terms as alderman and 2 terms as county treasurer. He had a sash and door business, Gies, Beyster & Ertz. He built St. John's Church on Russell St. Member of several German fraternal groups; president of the St. Joseph's Socirty of St. Mary's.
