Born in New York, he removed in 1835 with his parents to Canton, Wayne County, MI. He was brought up on a farm, became a carpenter and joiner by trade. He was a grocer at Ypsilanti, MI in 1865, and in 1866 built a malt house and brewery. He was a Supervisor and owned a large farm in the town of Superior.
