Son of Peter and Martha (Lockwood) Defer. Trustee and village president (9 years)of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan; elected 1919 and served 9 consecutive terms, ending in 1927. He also served as Grosse Pointe township treasurer; justice of the peace and township school board member (1921-24). He served for 3 years, 4 months during the Spanish American War

Notable Facts:
Died in office. According to Senate Concurrent Resolution 18, p. 955, 1927 Senate Journal he died 5/2/1927. Defer school in Grosse Pointe Park was named for him.
