Biographical Sketch:
Son of Lewis & Eliza (Marvin) Allen of Morristown, NY & NY City respectively. Worked on a farm until 20 years old, attending school and teaching during the winter. Admitted to the bar, 1860 Enlisted as 1st Lt. in the 29th Michigan Volunteer Infantry 7/1864; later lieutenant 9/1864 and adjutant and captain 5/1865; mustered out in 9/1865. Chair of the Committee on Education during first term. Served as speaker pro tem in the legislature his second term. Assistant Assessor of Internal Revenue 1869. An advocate for temperance. Michigan State Representative 1877-78 and 1879-80. Indian Agent for Michigan 1882-85. Member of Congress 1887-91. State Board of Agriculture 1899-1905. Alderman of Ypsilanti, MI, 1872-1876. Mayor of Ypsilanti, MI, 1880-81, 1899-1900. Member of the GAR
