Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish ancestry. Son of William Carter and Melissa (Sossett or Gossett) Hughes. He taught school before working as a travelling salesman in states west of the Mississippi for 2 years. He then became a miller, connected with mills in Marine City, Grand Ledge and Greenville. In 1885, he moved to Irving, Barry County, where he built a flour mill, which he owned and operated. He served as justice of the peace. He was living in Pleasant Twp, Wabash County, IN in 1900.

Notable Facts:
He was always a republican, but owing to the adoption of the financial plank in the republican platform, he felt justified In affiliating with the silver party. Date of death difficult to read on certificate; could be 4/23/1932
