Attended the Ferris Institute at Big Rapids and the Valparaiso University (Indiana).
Biographical Sketch:
Of Scotch, Dutch and English ancestry. When eight years of age, he moved with his parents to Michigan and they located in Lake county. In 1877 the family removed to Reed City, Osceola county. For a time he taught in rural schools, afterward holding the superintendency of the school of Tustin, Marion and Evart. He served on the board of county school examiners for five years and was commissioner of schools of Osceola county for fifteen years, resigning to accept the secretaryship of the teachers' retirement fund board at Lansing, which position he held two years. During the time he was commissioner he taught three summer terms at the Central Normal School and was also a member of the teachers' reading circle board.

Republican and was elected to the legislature in 1922 and re-elected November 4, 1924, by a vote of 3'091 to 803 for Mike Chain.
