Biographical Sketch:
Son of Robert and Caroline Briggs; when he was 3, they moved to Dryden, NY and later to Homer, NY. In 1853, he went to Lake Geneva, WI and worked in his uncle's [T.C. Smith] general store. He came to Michigan from Wisconsin in August 1864. He operated a series of stores in the western Upper Peninsula. He organized, and was president of, the Calumet and Arizona Mining company; president of the Merchants and Miners bank in Calumet [estab. 1873]; president of the Lake Superior & Western Development Co. [which merged with the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co in March 1901.] He was also president of the Calumet & Pittsburg Development CO; Pittsburg & Duluth Develoopment Co; Junction Development; E.F.Stton Co. of Lake Linden; and vice president of the Wolverine Cement Co. of Coldwater, MI. He served on the school board for several years. He was living in Calumet in 1911 but moved to Cleveland in October, 1920, where his son had a medical practice.

Notable Facts:
He donated $25,000 to endow the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Hospital in Calumet.
