Biographical Sketch:
He emigrated in 1856 and naturalized in 1860. At 16, he emigrated to Detroit. There, he learned the book-binding trade, working at it for 7 years. He joined the Scott Guards, a celebrated military company of Detroit, and served in various capacities, from the ranks to a commission. He enlisted as a private in Company A, 2nd Michigan Infantry, in 1861, and was elected Orderly Sergeant by his comrades. After the first battle of Bull Run he was promoted to be
Sergeant-Major of the regiment, and within a few weeks thereafter wag again promoted and commissioned First Lieutenant of his company, and subsequently Captain. He served as such for 2 years, participating in the battles of Bull Run, the Peninsular campaign, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Charles City Cross-roads, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill, the second Bull Run, Chantilly,
and Fredericksburg. Thereafter, he resigned on account of losing his hearing. Captain Goebel returned to Detroit and engaged in business. In 1870 he was appointed Superintendent of Public Parks, holding the position for one year. He engaged very extensively in the brewing business.
