He enlisted in the army in 1861. 68th Ohio Infantry (1861-3); made rank of 2nd Lieutenant in October, 1861; 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant, August 1862. He resigned due to wounds in August of 1863. He re-enlisted as a private in the 147th Ohio Infantry in 1864; made rank of Brevet Major. Moved to U.P in 1873 from Louisville, KY and was a contractor for the Sault Locks. Clerk of Sault St. Marie Canal. He served on the board of supervisors in 1877. "Scottish-rite" Mason
