Biographical Sketch:
He moved to Utica, NY at 12. He worked in a mercantile and was later appointed to the US mustering and disbursing office in Utica, 1861, organizing volunteer troops. In 1863 he was appointed to the War Dept. in Washington and was eventually appointed to a position in the Deserters' Bureau of the Provost Marshal General's office. In 1864 he became chief clerk in the Assistant Provost Marshal General's office in Hartford, CT. In 1866, he moved to Detroit. He briefly went west in 1868, mining gold and quartz, lumbeering, hunting and fighting in Indian wars in the Rocky Mountains and Wyoming. He returned to Detroit in 1870 and studied law. He opened a firm with George W. Moore in 1872.
