Biographical Sketch:
Of English descent. Son of Francis & Betsey (Boomer) Pierce, the 8th of 9 children. After his mother's death he went to live with the James Winchester family in Elk Creek. He was a miller until autumn 1862 when he enlisted in Co. D, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Averill's Brigade at 21. Wounded in battle; mustered out as a 2nd Lt, 11/1865. Moved to Colfax in Mecosta Co., 1871 where he manufactured shingles for 8 years. Elected co. treasurer 1878 & 1880. In October 1883 he formed a partnership with G. Clough in a hardware business.
