Biographical Sketch:
His parents, Louis and Margaret Engel, were Alsatian, emigrating to America in 1871 and settling in Grand Traverse County in 1900. He was raised on a farm in Mayfield twp. He worked in logging camps long enough to earn enough to moved to Chicago and attend university. Admitted to the bar, 1910. He was prosecuting attorney of Missaukee County 1916, 1917 when he enlisted in the army; 1st Lt. in the War Dept., Washington, DC, in WWI; promoted to capt. & served overseas for 23 months, 1917-1919. commissioned a captain while in France; honorably discharged in 1919. He was re-elected prosecuting attorney, 1919-20 and 1925-26. Operated a 1,400-acre tree plantation near Lake City, MI.
