Biographical Sketch:
Scots-Irish ancestry. Son of James (d.7/18/1828) & Elizabeth (Tate)(d.7/14/1861) Allen, native Virginians. Came to MI in 1824. Studied law but did not pursue it as a career. Lost his fortune in panic of 1837. Went to California in 1849 searching for gold. Died at age 56.

Founded Ann Arbor w. E.W. Rumsey; publ. the Western Immigrant (first newspaper in Washtenaw Co. w. Samuel Dexter. Over 6 feet tall. Legislative activities instrumental in the demise of the states separate chancery courts & constitutional provision for popular election of judges of the superior courts
