Education:
little log school-house on one corner of his father's farm before he was three years old. He continued his education in Richmond where his family moved when he was 6 years old. At the age of 18 he attended an academy for 4 weeks and then attended another term the next year.

Biographical Sketch:
He was the son of Edward and Abigail Palmer Allen. Taught in Huntington, VT until 1841; taught near Deckertown, NJ for 5 years; involved with a woolen mill in Branchville, Sussex Co., NJ for 3 years. Came to Michigan around 1850; settled on a farm in York Township, Washtenaw Co., MI. He was Justice of the Peace in York Twp. in 1854. He held various town offices.
