Biographical Sketch:
A native of Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Admitted to practice law in Livingston Co., NY before becoming a surveyor and engineer. Moved to Detroit in 1834 from Geneseo, NY. He was city surveyor until 1847. City engineer for Detroit; laid out the sewer system and street grades. In 1855 laid of the village of Kent (now Gr. Rapids, MI). Built the 1st stone dwelling in Gr. Rapids. Served as alderman and supervisor of Grand Rapids. One of the first county judges in Kent County. Connected to all of the early surveys for Michigan railroads through his work for the US General Land Office in Detroit.
