Of Scots-Irish descent; family settled in Londonderry, NH; father, John Anderson served in Revolutionary War & was in VT legislature for 11 years. Samuel was the youngest son. Raised in western New York state. Moved to LaGrange, Cass Co., MI in 1835 Democrat then Free Soil in 1852 then Republican in 1854. @ sons served in Civil War; killed.

Notable Facts:
Although initially a Democrat, he joined the anti-slavery Free Soil Party.
