Biographical Sketch:
He moved to Michigan at age 7. Went to Milwaukee with his father in 1842 and worked for the Courier there. He returned to Michigan in 1844 and became owner and editor of the Port Huron Observer until 1848. He studied law with Judge W.F. Allen of Oswego, NY then returned to Port Huron in 1851 to practice law until 1857 when his eyesight began to fail. He was then involved in banking and lumbering. He served as postmaster and first mayor of Port Huron, MI, 1857. he was collector of the port for 8 years. He pushed for a rail line from Port Huron to Chicago, succeeding in 1876 when the Chicago & Grand Trunk Railroad was completed. In 1900 he was living in Hot Springs, Arkansas with his son Edward.

Secretary of the Michigan Senate, 1849; Served in both chambers.
Candidate for US Representative from Michigan 5th District, 1866.
First mayor of Port Huron.
