Biographical Sketch:
Son of Daniel and Augusta (Dyer) Barber, the family was part of an Congregationalist company to move to Eaton County, MI when Julius was 14. Twice, he walked over 40 miles to work as a harvester and then walked home. He taught winter school in Vermontville, MI. He moved to Whitehall, NY in the spring of 1847 to clerk in a store. He joined a party heading to California, and they sailed in 1849 by way of Cape Horn. Mr. Barber was in charge of the business interest of the party in Sacramento, CA until a flood damaged the city. He returned east in 1854 and married. He moved to Coldwater, MI in November 1854 and opened a general store in 1855. He served several positions in local government including Assessor of Internal Revenue 2nd District appointed by Pres. Grant.
