Son of Phineas P. Bates. Came to Monroe in 1834 and resided there until his removal to Chicago in Feb., 1881. He was living in Frenchtown township in 1850. He served as township supervisor, 1848 and 1849; Member of the State Pioneer Society. He was living in Chicago at the time of his death in 1881.
