Biographical Sketch:
Born in New York state in 1814, he studied medicine in Chautauqua, New York before settling in Quincy, Michigan in 1836. He practiced medicine for over 30 years. He was elected as representative to the Michigan legislature from Branch County in 1842 and as state senator from the Third District in 1848-1849.
Notable Facts:
He secured the passage of the bill for building the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad over the veto of the governor. His speech on that occasion is said to have been "one of the most intensely interesting and soul-stirring speeches" ever delivered in the senate.
