He constructed of the Kalamazoo House, a hotel/tavern, in 1831 and was its landlord until 1834. He was one of the incorporators of Kalamazoo Mutual Insurance Company in 1834 and acted as the company's secretary for several years.
He was a commissioner 1833; a school inspector, 1833-35; an assessor, 1835; a township supervisor 1836-37; and a judge.
