Biographical Sketch:
Son of Levi Baxter, a Captain in the Revolution. Moved with father to western NY when a boy engaged in farming, lumbering and merchandising at Sidney Plains. Settled in Tecumseh MI in 1831 and built the "Red Mills", first of any size w. of Monroe.Gov. Cass made him Chief Justice of Lenawee County (Judge). Built a mill in Jonesville in 1834, the first west of Tecumseh and in 1836 moved to White Pigeon where he built large mills. Used his influence to make Jonesville a point on the Southern Railroad.
