Spent early life in woods working with his father in the manufacture of lumber when he conceived the idea of using cut-over land for agricultural purposes. In 1888 he began clearing, stumping and fencing and in 1919 had 800 acres under cultivation. Lecturer for Michigan Agricultural College.
