Biographical Sketch:
Of English and Irish ancestry. Son of Henry and Margaret (McHugh) Maxey. He left school at 15 to work in the lumber woods of the North, working the woods in the winter and the sawmills in the summer. He later worked as a millwright for some time. In 1890, he entered the railway train service and continued in this until 1899 when he returned to school. He was appointed to a position in the bureau of labor and industrial statistics, and later appointed state factory inspector, which position he resigned in 1904. He then moved to Marquette, MI, and engaged in the real estate business . Two years later he moved to L'Anse, MI, where he had extensive lumbering interests. In 1920, he was a real estate agent in Ann Arbor.
