Biographical Sketch:
Of Scottish descent. 2nd of 9 children of Judge Jay R. & Fanny (Rawson) Monroe. For 7 yrs, he surveyed Allegan & Van Buren Counties. He was county surveyor for Van Buren County. Settled in South Haven, MI, 1866. Taught for 8 terms. Involved in the organization of several banks. Studied law 1878-79 but did not practice. 1879 engaged in fruit culture near South Haven. He served as supervisor for 3 years and as school inspector.
