Biographical Sketch:
Moved to Michigan, 1849 with his parents, Col. Henry & Pamela (Rice) Whiting, who settled in St. Clair; left school to go into business in his father's store as a clerk. He was made a partner in 1870 and took over when his father died. Mayor of St. Clair, 1879; in 1886 incorporated the Crystal Diamond Salt Co. in St. Clair. Helped found St. Clair Mineral Springs Co.; engaged in the steamboat business. He was vice-president of the Ward Lumber Co of Chicago; senior member of J.R. Whiting and Co., Saint Clair; Alderman, director of the Union Schools for 3 years, trustee for Somerville School for Girls. Ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1898. Member of the Masons, Knights Templar, Knights of Pythias, Knights of the Maccabees, the Independent order of Foresters and sons of Veterans.
