O'Brien worked as a social worker for Catholic Family Services. She was a realtor with RE/MAX Advantage in Portage. She was a member of Michigan Realtors, Michigan Association of Home Builders, Michigan Farm Bureau, Kalamazoo Ladies Library Association, and Schoolcraft Ladies Library Association. She was the Portage City Councilwoman from 2003-2010, and the past chair of Kalamazoo County Environmental Health Advisory Council. She was the Past Vice-Chair of Kalamazoo County Republican Party, and a past coach of Girls on The Run and AYSO. She was a member of the Valley Family Church.
