Biographical Sketch:
Of Irish ancestry. Son of William and Margaret (Grodon) Vance. He moved to Saginaw, MI in 1846. He worked in various aspects of the lumber industry until August 1861 when he enlisted in Co. E, 2nd Michigan Cavalry. He owned and operated a tug boat on the Saginaw River for 3 year. From 1868-98 he was a log scaler and concluded his career in this line on Georgian Bay, Canada in 1898.
