Biographical Sketch:
Son of Kingsley and Elizabeth Allen Underwood. Of English ancestry. He began practicing medicine in Yarmouth, Cape Cod, MA; after 2 years he moved on to Quincy and then Amherst. In 1836, he came west to aid his sister's family. He decided to open a store in Adrian. He never practiced medicine except for his family and friends but carried on a drug business until 1850. He briefly had a private banking business under the name D.K. Underwood and Co., in Adrian. He taught for a time at the Rensselar Polytechnic Intitute in Troy, NY in 1869. H was president of a Pennsylvania coal company. He served on a school board for several years.
