Biographical Sketch:
Moved with his parents, Stephen Van Rensselaer Trowbridge and Elizabeth (Conkling) Trowbridge, in 1821 to Troy township, Oakland Co., MI, among the first settlers of the area. As an adult he maintained their home on his farm near Gilbert lake, in Bloomfield township, and in 1859 he traded this property for a grist mill in Birmingham. He served as supervisor of Bloomfield township. President Hayes appointed him Indian commissioner, a position he held until his death in 1881.

Notable Facts:
Elected as a Republican to the 37th Congress (3/4/1861-3/3/1863); elected to the 39th-40th Congresses (3/4/1865-3/3/1869);chairman, Committee on Agriculture (40th Congress);Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1880 and 1881. He was roommates with Rutherford B. Hayes in college.
